The Recorder Lesson, 1981
Oil on canvas, 28 x 22
Collection of David and Sharon Jasper

The Recorder Lesson is one of Gjertson’s best known works, having been reproduced on the covers of many books and magazines as well as a series of signed, limited edition prints. It was commissioned by a person who wanted a small painting with a musical theme using the artist’s Victorian sofa and a particular Oriental vase. Gjertson was inspired by the work of Frederic Leighton and Albert Moore and spent almost nine months working on the painting.
