The Newborn, 1989
Oil on canvas, 29 x 27
The Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, NJ Gift of Fred and Sherry Ross
In October and November of 1988 Gjertson painted The Grace of Life. In December their second daughter was born. Because he had lacked the confidence to paint his other children at such a young age, he wanted to attempt a painting of her. He had also wanted to paint his wife in her bright red nightgown. Taking advantage of the fact that newborns sleep most of the time, the artist combined these motives into this double portrait, which he painted from life during the first month after their daughter was born.
