Favorite Toys, 2008
Oil on canvas, 28 1/2 x 26
Like many young children, Gjertson’s granddaughter, Ava, played in his kitchen with the things that she found in their cupboards. He painted this work to express her interest in the pan covers and storage bowls that she found toys more interesting than the expensive ones she had left in the living room. It’s funny how little children will open their birthday or Christmas presents and then spend their time playing with the wrapping paper and boxes.
